In China's Water Warriors, Andrew C. Mertha argues that as China has become increasingly market driven, decentralized, and politically heterogeneous, the control and management of water has been transformed from an unquestioned economic imperative into a lightning rod of bureaucratic infighting, societal opposition, and even open protest, thus illustrating the pluralization (as distinct from "democratization") of the policymaking process in China. A new preface provides updates about recent developments in the three main narratives. Book jacket., Today opponents of large-scale dam projects in China, rather than being greeted with indifference or repression, are part of the hydropower policymaking process itself. What accounts for this dramatic change in this critical policy area surrounding China's insatiable quest for energy? In China's Water Warriors, Andrew C. Mertha argues that as China has become increasingly market driven, decentralized, and politically heterogeneous, the control and management of water has transformed from an unquestioned economic imperative to a lightning rod of bureaucratic infighting, societal opposition, and open protest.Although bargaining has always been present in Chinese politics, more recently the media, nongovernmental organizations, and other activists actors hitherto denied a seat at the table have emerged as serious players in the policy-making process. Drawing from extensive field research in some of the most remote parts of Southwest China, China's Water Warriors contains rich narratives of the widespread opposition to dams in Pubugou and Dujiangyan in Sichuan province and the Nu River Project in Yunnan province.Mertha concludes that the impact and occasional success of such grassroots movements and policy activism signal a marked change in China's domestic politics. He questions democratization as the only, or even the most illuminating, indicator of political liberalization in China, instead offering an informed and hopeful picture of a growing pluralization of the Chinese policy process as exemplified by hydropower politics. For the 2010 paperback edition, Mertha tests his conclusions against events in China since 2008, including the Olympics, the devastating 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, and the Uighar and Tibetan protests of 2008 and 2009."

In that turbulent era, Wu's rich emotional experiences and love stories were also a mirror for the Chinese society, with some details comparable to the plots of suspense novels and movies. This collection of critical reflections, written by leading scholars in the field, sheds light on the meanings of world politics in what we are calling The Interregnum. It has shown that price stability as provided by the European Central Bank is not enough to guarantee financial stability, and exposed fault lines in governance and deficiencies in the architecture of the financial supervisory and regulatory framework. The central question of the Special Issue might be put as follows: what do the major controversies in world politics in the 1990s tell us about the characteristics of the age, who we are, and where world politics might be going?, We are living in an era which seemingly defies description: in social and political theory, our age is frequently referred to as "postmodern;" in international relations, we remain in the "post-Cold War" age.In Politics and Power in Late Fatimid Egypt, Kirsten Thomson offers an examination of this leader as well as highlighting the context within which he lived: the relations between different empires and between different ethnic and religious groups, sectarianism and the massive contrast between al-Mustansir's secular and religious leadership. In doing so, the contributors show that sustainability is a far more complex phenomenon than is often assumed, and that economic and social sustainability are inherently linked to linked to environmental sustainability. It is an informative history of Roman architecture with over 250 photographs, drawings, diagrams and cross-sections.The third and final section looks at major themes in International Relations - globalization, democratization, cooperation and conflict - and applies them to the Middle East, offering a regionally-sensitive perspective., In this new edition ofInternational Relations of the Middle East, leading scholars present a balanced and comprehensive analysis of the international politics of the region. The critical theories that contributors develop around key concepts in religion--such as authority , community, church , ethics , pilgrimage , ritual , text , and practice --contribute to advancing the emerging field of religion and media studies. This Companion has long been a standard introduction to the field.
